Amniocentesis

This is done under ultrasound guidance and usually takes about 30 minutes from the start of the consultation to finish. Full written information is provided and any questions answered. Then the actual procedure is carried out and the amniotic fluid obtained sent to the laboratory in Brisbane for testing. A FISH (link) result is available within 48 hours in most cases with full culture back usually by 10 days, although this can take up to three weeks. Written advice on what to do and what NOT to do post procedure is given, as well as any sick notes that may be required.

The all important results are analysed preferably by the Sullivan and Nicolaides laboratory. There will be an out of pocket expense for these tests. These costs are completely at the discretion of the lab, however, if it seems excessive, there is a help line to ring (see the Sullivan and Nicolaides web page under “Resources” “General Medical”) In broad terms, the FISH test will cost approximately $65 out of pocket after medicare rebates, and the final culture should not exceed an out of pocket cost of $80, although the test itself is about $400.
